Students Relocated After Roof Leak

A roof leak in a local Edmonton school has forced 322 students to leave their classes and move to two different schools from May until the end of the year. Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2 will go to Our Lady of Victoria, and the older students from Grade 3 to 6 will be moved to H.E. Beriault. The roof repairs are expected to take four months.

The roof leak at the Good Shepherd Elementary School was caused by a design flaw that is now “allowing water to leak into the walls which is causing mold to develop.” The repairs have been estimated at $5 million.

Cindy Shepel, a parent of one of the displaced students feels the school has the “students’ best interests in mind by moving them temporarily.”

Shuttle buses have been contracted by the school board to provide transportation for the students of Good Shepherd and take them to their new schools for the remainder of the term.

Shepel, added “I trust that they’ve looked at this and its something that needs to be done and they need to leverage construction over the summer and I understand it.”
